A Week In Paradise

WAGONTEAMSTER .COM

Kauai, Hawaii 5/2/09 - 5/9/09 - Back in February of this year, I was planning a warm weather vacation to thaw out. The trip was to begin shortly after the date I was nearly flattened by a truck in Mississippi.  Although delayed three months, I was physically healed enough to recently take the trip.  This past week, I spent a week on the island of Kauai with my friend Debbie. It was a really great week - “they don’t come any better!”  This trip was my, post - “Almost Road Pizza” sanity check. Following is a brief journal of the trip.

5/2/09 - We spent most of the day traveling from Indianapolis to Kauai.  This island is one of the real jewels of the tropics. But, like all of the best places, it can take a while to get there. After picking up six time zones, we finally arrived at about 5 pm local time, picked up our car and checked into a beach front condo at the Wapouli Beach Resort in Kapa’a, Kauai. The remainder of the day was grabbing some groceries, supper and downing a couple of margaritas.

5/3/09 - For our first full day on the island, we decided to drive to the most Northern point on Kauai and go for a hike in the Napali wilderness. We hiked 5 miles back to a really nice waterfall.  Deb took particular delight at teasing me about how out of shape I was and the excuses I made.  Once I reminded myself about the old saying - “I don’t want to hear about the labor pains, just show me the baby”, I managed to do okay - well, I think I did.

5/4/09 - In the morning, we stopped by Lydgate park and did our best to fatten up the tropical fish. After adding the the fish obesity problem, we did a little site-seeing

The highlight of the activities for the day was an ocean bluff horseback ride at Princeville Ranch. As both of us are real horse enthusiast, we really enjoyed this trip.

5/5/09 - The majority of this day was spent on a visit to the Hawaiian Grand Canyon - Waimea Canyon.  The sites were spectacular and included some wild goats jumping from rock to rock below us. At the head of the canyon we went for a 2 or 3 mile hike to take in some scenery.

After seeing the canyon, we stopped for lunch at Poipu, on the south side of the island, then went back to the hotel for a little swimming and sun.

5/6/09 - The morning was spent beach-hopping on the north side of the island. We managed to hit most of the beaches from “Ahini” (south of Princeville) to Ke’e beach in the far north.

The afternoon was spent on ziplines. If you’ve never done this, try it - it’s a whole lot of fun.

5/7/09 - We started this day of by going to the south side of the island.  At a park in Poipu, we spent a couple of hours playing in the surf.  While my shoulder got a little sore body surfing in the normal fashion, I found I could do a pretty good job on my back - I just had to watch the wave break so I didn’t get a nose full of water.

Then we went down the street to another park and had a great time snorkling. The variety of fish was truly amazing. Just when you think you had seen them all, you would paddle over to another stretch and find some completely new varieties.

After a good Sushi lunch with Mimosas we went back to the hotel and hung around the pool and the beach.

5/8/09 - Before checking out and heading to the airport on our last morning, we were treated to some nice Ariel displays in front of the hotel by a pair of humpback whales.

Now it’s off to work, I’ve got a wagon to fix up, and a team to buy and train up!

5/11/09, Hickory, NC - I’m currently in North Carolina until Wednesday.  I have a few doctor appointments. Then I’m off to Western New York state to look at a pair of horses.
